Sammy : Your long wait will be over

The essence of life from the perspective of a Malaysian Beauty Queen, Samantha James

Many of us can't contain our feelings when we learned the hardships that our beloved Miss Universe Malaysia 2017 have gone through to be where she is today. The journey wasn’t always a happy ride. In fact, she had to hurdle countless obstacles since she was at a very tender age.
Let’s follow Samantha Katy James’ journey in order to achieve her dream by winning the coveted Miss Universe Malaysia crown with a mission to end Malaysia’s 49 years of non-placement or eventually win the Miss Universe crown.

It really touched our heart the most is the story about her long lost father whom she never had the chance to see eye to eye even once in her entire lifetime. Even after winning the title that most Malaysian women aim for, which is Miss Universe Malaysia, she is still with her strong will to look after her father and she is not ashamed to admit that. Sammy herself had tried to search for her father and this started when she was 17, the age where she could find her own source of income so she could go to Brazil. Why Brazil ? Interesting fact, Samantha was born to a Chinese-Malaysian mother and a Brazilian father. After she was born, her mother took her back to her home country Malaysia and had never been in contact with her father ever since. Her love towards her father never faded despite after all that has happened.

Her life started when she touched down in Malaysia, a country she called home where her mother decided to settle down in Malaysia’s capital of Kuala Lumpur. She had to be taken care under her adopted grandparents of Malaysian-Indian descent. Even though it was hard for her mother at that moment to do so, but she had to do it so she could provide a decent life to both of them. Being a single mom is hard enough, but to live separately with her daughter is definitely hundred times harder. So did for Samantha. Fortunately, her adoptive grandparents raised her very well despite of their strict way of raising children. Nothing but love for Samantha as both of her grandparents treat her as if she is their own grandchild. Samantha in her interview always cited her grandparents as her source of inspiration and she is grateful to be loved by them.

Most teens would experience being bullied at school and Sammy was one of them. Being teased for looking ‘different’ due to her mixed race background, it somehow affected her confidence. She was often called “The white girl” or “Mr Bean”. To make it worst, her classmates would blame her for something she didn’t do which later caused her inner self to shatter and later developed herself to be a shy person in school. There’s always a rainbow after every storm, she is blessed with few close friends that have been her ultimate support system to go through the ups and downs together. Some of them are still her best friends up until today.

All of the hardships that she went through has helped her to be more focused in achieving her dreams. That’s when she set her goal to be an actress and a model. At the same time, she also made the cut to be one of the finalists of Miss Universe Malaysia 2013 at the age of 18 where Carey Ng was crowned as the successor to Kimberly Legget. She was the top 8 finalist. Sammy aware that her shyness and her lack of experience stopped her from advancing more into the competition but she made a promise that she will be back one day.

There’s a silver lining in every cloud and she believed that everything will work into her favour if she were to believe in herself and put away all the doubts that could have shaken her spirit. After MUM 2013, she found her passion for modelling. Starting from a local advertisement, she spread her wings to the international scene where she landed a few roles in well known brands’ tv commercial. Be it printed or tv commercial, she did it all. She has proven to herself that shyness can no longer hold her back as she wants to soar higher. She started to embrace her figure and her unique beauty and that was the start of her successful career when she was poured down with many modelling and commercial gigs. These incredible experiences allowed her to travel to several countries like USA, Brazil, India, Thailand and Australia to name a few. Due to her well grown career, she was signed to Ford Models, one of the most renowned modelling agencies in the world.

After gaining enough exposure, she decided to join Miss Universe Malaysia for the second time. She was the first girl to do so as there were never any girls who would have the courage as hers to come back after her failure last time. At the age of 22, she was one of the finalists in Miss Universe Malaysia 2017 competition and she has been dubbed as one of the heavy favourites to win the crown by pageant fans.

She broke her ankle on the first two weeks of the pageant camp yet she did not make it as an excuse to stop her from showing the best quality she has. Her endless perseverance has helped her advance as one of the semi finalists during the final night. She ended up clinching the title as Miss Universe Malaysia 2017 after her second trial.

Her dreams are almost complete but it will not stop until she wins the most desirable tittle of Miss Universe. With her status as Miss Universe Malaysia, nothing has changed much, she is still the humble Sammy that everyone knows. As one of her preparations to the pageant week that will be held later on November in the city of Last Vegas, Sammy is now an active activist of local foster houses around Kuala Lumpur. She loves kids and that’s why she feels very close to them. She is indeed a woman who is confidently beautiful with a heart and embodies the quality of the next Miss Universe.
